During the last days of the war, troops of the 65th division liberated German concentration camps they came across in Bavaria. Tony's company M of the 260th was involved. He shot pictures in one camp, though it's not certain which one. It could be a subcamp of Mauthausen, a major concentration camp which had 40 subcamps all over Austria. The liberation took place on April 20th and 21st, 1945. At left is an engraved marker in the Mauthausen main camp acknowledging the role of the 65th Division troops in liberating the camps.
In 1994 the 65th Infantry Division was recognized as a camp liberating unit by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Tony never said anything about what he saw. But using this camera he shot these 7 pictures and sent them home to his fiancee. He wrote messages on the backs of the photos that reveal his feelings at the time.
